Cylinder type viscous damper (NES-D)

Consistent attenuation performance across all amplitudes

During an earthquake, the viscous damper disperses inertial forces in the superstructure through the substructure work and absorbs impact forces. By providing consistent attenuation performance across all amplitudes, the viscous damper discourages response displacement and acceleration and minimizes damage to the overall structure.

Minimal resistance to superstructure movement associated with thermal expansion and contraction

Viscous dampers offer minimal resistance to movement associated with expansion and contraction caused by temperature variation.

Sustained and reliable performance

Viscous dampers will continue to disperse repeated tremors (typically the main earthquake and aftershocks) through the bridge abutment and piers without loss of strength or resilience.
